‘The Balkan Girls’ by Elena Gheorghe
Elena Gheorghe representing Romania will sing ‘The Balkan Girls’ at the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest.
The Balkan Girls is recorded by the Romanian singer Elena Gheorghe. The song was written by Laurenţiu Duţă and Alexandru Pelin while the production was handled by Ovidiu Bistriceanu, Laurenţiu Duţă, and Daris Mangal. The song is a folk-influenced dance-pop song whose refrain celebrates the party life of Balkan girls;
“The Balkan girls, they like to party, like nobody, like nobody”.
TVR held the National Selection on the 31st of January 2009 where Elena was chosen to represent Romania in the Eurovision Song Contest after votes by a professional jury totaling 12 points and public televoting totaling 10 points were tallied, resulting in 22 points. Elena Gheorghe’s win was contested by fans of the Romanian rock band Blaxy Girls, who placed second with 18 points for ‘Dear Mama’
The music video for “The Balkan Girls” was premiered during TVR1’s Danutz S. R. L. on 15 March 2009. The music video was filmed by Dragoș Buliga near bridges in Argeș County and at Bucharest’s Silver Church Club. The choreography was done by Paul Gheorghe, while Cătălin Enache was hired as a stylist.
