Romania ‘Pre-Qualified’ for Eurovision Song Contest 2002

Monica Anghel & Marcel Pavel represented Romania in the 47th edition of Eurovision Song Contest with the song ‘Tell Me Why’.

The ballad, “Tell Me Why” was written by Mirela Fugaru and produced by Ionel Tudor, containing a saxophone, guitar, and keyboards in its instrumentation. The song was recorded by the Romanian singers Monica Anghel and Marcel Pavel at the Midi Sound Studio in Bucharest.

Selecția Națională was held in Bucharest on 3rd March 2002 when “Tell Me Why” was chosen to represent Romania in the Eurovision Song Contest 2002, after the votes of a professional jury panel and public televoting were combined, resulting in 19 points.

The finale of Eurovision Song Contest 2002 took place in Tallinn at Saku Suurhall on the 25th May 2002. Monica and Marcel performed “Tell Me Why” in 21st place and after voting they came in ninth place with 71 points (12 points from Russia and Macedonia; 8 points from Israel, Greece, and Cyprus; 7 points from Turkey, 6 points from Malta; 5 points from Spain; 4 points from France and finally 1 point from Germany).

The spokesperson for TVR was Leonard Miron a Romanian television and radio presenter and journalist who works for Romanian National Television (Televiziunea Română).
